Surprisingly intelligent spinning techno from the ringleader of the excellent milk (http://milk.sgic.fi) - check them out at your peril, and check this out at your penelope pitstop. wish it were longer, but for the length it is, it wanders about and pulses and altogether sounds like one of aphex's better moments. but more original than that implies. put it on repeat, our brains liked that as well. you mustn't make your brain angry. hope you all enjoy.

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived. Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga 'demo-scene' and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that's characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that's pretty much unlike most of the other music...

He had a part in the first ever Mono release back in 1996, and he's being hanging around with us ever since, poor guy. Now, UK composer/DJ Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish, fact-fans!) has been good enough to provide us with the first of two superior DJ mixes. This one fits squarely into the Mono211 'breakbeats' peg with some super-hot, cutely mixed nu-skool breaks action. So, we're talking Waveform, Uptown Connection, Ils, BT/Hybrid (with superlative Kirsty Hawkshaw vocals), and even Luke...

We like it when old friends return to Monotonik, and after his very well-received EP on our net.label last year, Holland's excellent Secede provides a truly epic new track, "The Whistler", ahead of his "Bye Bye Gridlock Traffic" album forthcoming on Merck , and his smart-ola remix work for N5MD and Merck. It's good to thrive on angles, and "The Whistler" plots a course away from your average pure-toned geektronica, edging ever-closer to the template of...

A little more of the mixed-up-ness for your tired brain, and perhaps the best mix Monotonik's released so far, Slovenia's DJ Nova presents us with a mix of classic older Monotonik tracks from Lackluster/Distance, Prob, Jiva, and others.. In the style of his previous mix for Mono211, but much more laidback, "Oldskoolmonotonikantiks" uses soundscapes, cut-ups, and ethereal voice-overs to really mix things up intelligently, and the selection of tracks is pin-point sharp. In conclusion -...

Monotonik hasn't had much chance to showcase less dark chill-out mixes up to now, but with so many of our artists being fans of the dreamiest ambient techno, as showcased by the FAX label and bands like Global Communication, it was only a matter of time. Fortunately, San Francisco's gd, an oldskool demo-fan and friend of Mono, has stepped up to the plate, so to speak, and delivered an excellent mix that blends Deep Space Network, Pete Namlook, and even Monolake in a sparsely electronic but...

With all the mp3s Monotonik+friends have been releasing of late, sometimes people (including us!) forget about the 200+ .MODs we released from 1996-1999, all of which are still available on the Mono site! Fortunately, US-based Luminfire hasn't forgotten about the early house, techno, and beat-based .MODs we put out as Mono back then, and so he put together this mix for us that highlights some of the best material from back then. The Monotonik mix-terror continues with German musician, DJ, and collaborator sys(2074), maintainer of the Corewatch Conspiracy, and boy, what a cute lil near-75-minute mix he's concocted for us Earth aliens. Not purely content with tricking around with Drexciya, Techno Animal and Alec Empire, sys(2074) throws his own little interludes and even Vektrex on a Monotonik tip into the whole caboodle. Highly recommended on the dark-ish intriguing-ish tip. Tracklisting: 01. BASS-O-MATIC love catalogue...

He's done it again. He's found some vocals no-ones sampled yet (as far as he knows). He's sped them up and pitched them to infinity. He's laid a break over a kickdrum and he's put a synth stab on every half beat. He's also come up with one of the worst dinosaur-related puns ever. Yea, verily DJ Ninjamachine has entered the building, bringing with him yet more of the good mindless happy stuff. Mono mainstay and UK breakz+techno-terror Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish) gives us another absolute gem of a mix, and this time it's a drum+bass extravanganza taken from the best of the junglistically influenced Mono/Mono211/Monotonik tunes to be released over the past 4 years. This is also unique in that it's Hoffman's first virtual mix - whilst he's a whiz with the ol' Technics, this track was mixed using the Virtual Turntables PC software alongside a Numark mixer, plus an Alesis...

As if to prove that the first release wasn't a flash in the pan, monoRAVEik's new find Mistress Nine returnz with something just a little sparser than the last time, but no less effective nonetheless. Stripped-down industrial jump-up is the name of the game, and our Welsh siren is more than equal to the task. Harsh snares and a commanding vocal sample covered by an all-conquering bassline make this track one to be played loud, for there is no other way. Apart from her DJing antics amongst the...

Subi brings it back after nearly a year (was it?) away from the tracker with the nearly understandable title "Trying 2 B Hardcore". If anyone thought that the cheesemix of "Serendipity City" was representative of Subi's new direction, they are proved wrong by this jet propelled slice of D&B&Rock&Roll. What new...

Well, we certainly don't release many DJ sets here at Monotonik - in fact, the last one was over 2 years ago, wow. And the main reason for this is that there's very few good eclectic mixes out there. That irrepressibly, uhh, irrepressible Subi returns with a new release on his very own monoRAVEik sublabel, and this time it's a 21st century remake of an almost decade-old track of his, "Serendipity City". Whilst the original stayed very .MOD-ish and staccato, this remix smooths out to funky oldskoolinflected drum-roll breaks and an almost progressive breakbeat feel. Could it be that, finally, Subi is coming back in fashion? This track wouldn't feel out of place in a nu-skool breaks...

Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat, has never really let up on the composition, but has, rather wonderfully, regressed in his choice of hardware over time, from Amiga, through Commodore 64, to Vic-20, with sideways glances to the Game Boy. But it's his C64 equivalent of 'The White Album', the appropriately named 'The White Box', which sums up some of his borderline deviant SID-chip excursions over the previous few years. The actual 'White Box' artifact is a ...

A return for Ramone, and it's just as blunted as usual. Mm, in our opinions, rather wonderful - but then, what do we know, huh? :) Perhaps original because it's not afraid to be a bit more downtempo than your conventional hiphop-jungle-hybrid. Then again, it could be the schmokes that make us choke. We'll just slope off then :)

Another Monotonik DJ-mix wanders brightly your way, and this time it's from long-time Portugese Mono associate, Rents, who's mixed up this rather lovely 73-minute cut-up, featuring everything from the obvious but gorgeous Aphex remixes and Kreidler to the inspired (Snooze - "Your Consciousness Goes Bip" - a forgotten classic, for one!) With environmental effects cleverly mixed in, and real-time tracklisting and graphics on the streaming version, courtesy of Realplayer G2, this is...

Vim! almost went away a couple of months back, but thankfully he didn't quite finish with the scene as he said, and he's still hanging around, to increasing acclaim. Here's one of his latest tracks, exclusive to Mono, and it's another cracker - tight Squarepusher-style percussive shenanigans with an original edge. Ken Dodd, for those not in the know, is a very strange English comedian with protruding teeth, a 'tickling stick', and a very strange.. attitude. So the title fits, then? :)

This tune was originally composed by Dreamfish back in 1994 as a full-ahead trance tune (and is actually one of the tracks featured on the TRSI Recordz "Cyberlogik" CD.. go buy the CD if you want to know what the original sounds like!) In March 1996, remixing it was put forward as a music-competition on the UK "Digital Candy" BBS, and h0l stepped forward. Soon after that, Mono was born. h0l still doesn't know if he won the remixing competition or not. ;) The vocal sample...

The debut EP from rather way-out Mono member Vim!, this serves as a showcase for his, well, totally original style. There sure as hell ain't many tunes like this coming out, and it makes a refreshing change to hear something different. Even if "Your Cup Of Tea" is so far out, it makes 4T Thieves' ambient madness sound relatively normal. As far as Mono HQ remembers, Vim! told us this track was composed using all of his homegenerated samples. Mad nuttah. :)

...bloody hell, what were we drinking last night? Agh. Er. Anyway. It was Subi's birthday yesterday, he is now 365 days from Last Day, and we had a bit of bash over here in monoRAVEik city. Such a bacchanalian assemblage of best bitter and sexual deviancy has not been seen since the days of George IV. And in honour of this august occasion, and because we're all to drunk to track, we're finally releasing the tune Subi did at the Ars Electronica Electrolobby in 2000 (see here for more info). Only...

An excellent track in a guest stylee from smart tdr affiliate meester Paniq, showing that the jungle scene and The Prodigy can have a little soundclash and come off none the worse for wear. Just jiggle the head and swing the hips and you'll get by just fine. Btw, we really recommend using the latest version of MikIt to listen to this track, because it uses resonant filter stuff and things which are only in da new version.. you can get it (v1.0 beta 2!) at:...

back once again it's the renegade master.. oops, sorry, we're off into our fatboy slim remix mode for a second.. we said, brimful of asha on the for-tee fiiive. ohno, there we go again. actually, what we're trying to spit out is that mono211 hath returned with another mortimer special. the very strange "under" is dedicated to master of sonic terrorism vim!, and the excellent bonus track, a remix of mortimer's earlier m211 release, "mood", appeared some days after the...

The return of the Mack, wouldn't you know it, and it's with a brand-new composed jungle track. Mortimer reckons b-boy science is the way to go, but the drum n' bass still puts us in our place, huh? Please note that this is numero duo in the 'mono-back-on-track' series. And watch out for more Mortimer Twang stuff on Mono soon. If you would.

Whoaa. Prob. steps up to bat with this viciously chaotic slab of noise, kicking and punching its way to an early grave. But fortunately, it stops just short and reels furiously into the ambient abyss for the last part of the track, where it stays suspended in limbo, as ineffectual as a little kitty with filed-down claws.

Well, here's a phenomenal guest-star blaster from Mortimer Twang, and there's a long and complicated story behind this one. :) Basically, Mr. Twang sent me a letter after I sent him a letter after he sent Dreamfish a letter after he heard some of our releases after I used his cool IFF2ASCII in the Mono releases after God made the Earth, but Mortimer's package to me got mangled and the letter got lost out of it in the post, and I wasn't really sure what the hell was going on, but I hope it's ok...

Wow + ee. :) I'd really like to meander off into hyperbole about just how amazing I think this EP is, but I don't really think that's appropriate, or necessary - the music speaks for itself. I'll just satisfy myself with saying that this is one of my favourite Mono releases so far. :) Oh, and please note that Dreamfish is also rather a handy DJ under the name of DJ Hoffman, so try to catch his sets if you happen to live in the West Country, UK, heehee. :) Finally, in case you weren't aware,...

Already out on 'limited dub plate' lha-archive release, but only available to the very luckiest of Amiga owners, this storming intelligent drum+bass track now comes out via official Mono methods. Turn those speakers _up_, sonny, before we come round and tell you to turn them up some more. And watch out for a "Minimal Response EP" from the utterly charming blonde Substance-abuser.

It may not surprise you to know that Mono and associated labels continues to cherish Subi. As mentioned before, if we were John Peel, he'd be The Fall, and now he even gets his own custom sublabel for this, his first all-new single in a year or two, preceding his forthcoming _blockbuster_ bestof mp3 album, "The Rave-O-Lution Will Be Terrorised - The Best Of Subi 1989-2000" :) He's English, he makes videogames for a living, he still honestly believes it's 1990, and...

About as elektronik as you can get, this LP features conversions of some of the best computer music ever. Martin Galway, Rob Hubbard, Fred Gray.. legends, all of them. We hope you enjoy Dreamfish's versions of these wicked Commodore 64 SID tunes, anyhow - some of these conversions have been released before, and some haven't seen the outside of Dreamfishie's bedroom.) In any case, thanks to the original artists, wherever you may be now. Carpe diem.

Well, this tune has had a limited release before, but it's such a great remix that we wanted to make sure it got _properly_ spread. Listen to those breakbeats roll, and enjoy. Oh, and turn up the sub-bass. :)

The first Amiga tune from Twilight for almost 2 years sees him in original hip-hop influenced territory. :) Twilight's currently the in-game musician at Graftgold, the UK software company behind such classics as "Uridium", and he's currently working on the PSX and Saturn conversion of one of the very best Amiga games ever (hint: it's an arcade conversion itself!) We hope to hear lots more from _this_ Twilight pretty soon. By the way, this is the English Twilight, not the German...

Distance wanted to try something he considered closer to 'conventional' techno.. so he did.. and.. well, put this on, lie down, and just float away into the ether. Fragile but just so beautiful, this proves beyond a doubt that he is the Finnish god of the drifting airwaves. No arguments, now. or ever.

Our first guest-starring Mono release (apart from the remixes of the since-joined Supernao!) is a wicked, weird techno piece by the PC musician Vivid, who's a member of Kosmic and Radical Rhythms, two of the kicking-est PC music-groups. He's kindly reduced his composing power to 4 channels to release on Mono, and I really like the result: original and funky, ma maan. Btw, I believe some of the speech in the tune is taken from "The X-Files" TV series, by the way. Whatever that is. :P...
